A duvet cover not only protects your favorite comforter from wear and tear, it is also easy to wash. From beautiful romantic floral designs to funky and fun polka dots, the different styles and colors on a duvet cover are endless. But what bedding is needed to complete the look of a duvet cover? Continue reading and you will soon find out:

Bed Skirt or Dust Ruffle - duvet covers are similar to comforters in which they both may drape a few inches below the top mattress, exposing a wooden frame beneath the mattress that is covered in cloth and contains springs. This wooden frame is called the box spring. A bed skirt or dust ruffle is used to cover the unattractive box spring. They not only hang down to the floor and hide the box spring but they also prevent dust from accumulating under the bed while adding a decorative touch to the bedroom. Although the bed skirt and dust ruffle serve the same purpose, they are not the same. A dust ruffle is a pleated or gathered piece that usually has an elastic band that attaches snuggly around the entire box spring. The bed skirt however, does not involve the use of an elastic band. It actually has a ruffled or pleated outer section that is sewn onto three sides of a solid fabric and is placed over the box spring.

Fitted or Flat Sheets - Sleeping on a mattress without any sheets is very unsanitary. We shed skin cells and hair that dust mites love to cling on. Without any bed sheets, we will be laying in all of our dead skin cells and hair, yuck! That is why it is very important to have a fitted sheet or flat sheet covering the mattress. A fitted sheet has an elastic sewn into each one of its four corners. This helps prevent the sheet from slipping off the mattress. A flat sheet however, does not have an elastic and is also known as a top sheet. The flat sheet goes over the fitted sheet and comes between the sleeper and duvet cover. With a duvet cover, the flat sheet isn't really necessary. Although if made long enough, the flat sheet can actually be used in place of a fitted sheet or bed skirt.

Down Comforter or Alternative Down Comforter - although any regular comforter can be placed inside a duvet cover, there is nothing better than the light, comfortable and luxurious feel of a down or alternative down comforter. A down comforter is filled with duck or goose down. The square or diamond-shaped patterns that you see on a down comforter are actually internal walls that keep the down from shifting within the comforter. These walls help prevent "cold spots" in your down comforter. An alternative down comforter however, is filled with synthetic or natural filling materials. This is perfect for those who are allergic to down. Allergy prone individuals get the feel that is similar to down with this type of bedding but without the allergies.
